Maryknoll School, Hawaii, is collaborating with Shanghai Nanyang Model High School teaching athletes to become the next generation of leaders skilled in diplomacy, empathy, and solving world issues through international athletic competition. “Common Goal” athletes will practice diplomacy skills, cooperation strategies, teamwork, and tolerance, all within the confines of athletic preparation, sportsmanship, and positive human interaction.
Common Goals athletes will learn and practice:
• How Language and culture impact human understanding when trying to influence decisions
• How empathy skills develop an awareness of the feelings and emotions of other people and their values
• How global citizenship skills develop leaders whose actions contribute to building universal values
• How history and family life influences values, identity, culture, values, and viewpoints
• Understanding the importance of finding common ground with other people whose beliefs are marked by a range of actions different than theirs
• How diplomacy education is key to the future of high school students world wide
• How the various aspects of sports can promote global cooperation
• How patience, timeliness, empathy, and kindness build bridges of cooperation
