Paul Chinen ’57

Board Member Emeritus
Paul Chinen '57 is the son of Kailua vegetable farmers. While in school, he was a member of Maryknoll’s ROTC and rifle team, as well as the Army Reserve. Paul earned his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Seattle University and his master’s degree in civil and structural engineering from Iowa State University. He served 31 years of active duty with the US Army Corps of Engineers, including a two-year volunteer stint in Vietnam as a combat engineer; a position at the Pentagon; and command of the North Atlantic Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, headquartered in New York City. As the recipient of the Army Engineer Association’s Silver de Fleury Medal, Paul was described using the phrases, “Inspirational leadership…selfless service…a beacon for others to follow…” He retired in 1994 as a brigadier general, the first general of Okinawan ancestry in the US Army. Paul recently retired as Vice President of the Pacific Region Office of Earth Tech, Inc. He is a former president of the Maryknoll School Alumni Association and was the recipient of the 2007 Alumni Achievement Award. Paul is married to Yvonne Chinen. He has a son, Paul Jr., and a daughter, Kelly.
