Another Great Pupus with the President Night

Marketing & Communications
On Tuesday, August 28th, we hosted our annual “Pupus with the President” night at the Maryknoll Community Center. Each year, School President Mr. Perry Martin hosts the event to welcome families to the new year and share upcoming plans and news with our Spartan ‘ohana. This year, we had over 200 parents in attendance, along with a number of faculty, staff, administrators, Parent-Teacher Alliance (PTA) Executive Committee members and Parent Grade Level Representatives!
We were very grateful to have Fr. EJ Resinto, Associate Pastor of Sacred Heart Church and Maryknoll School, offer a blessing for our families. In January 2019, our long-time pastor Fr. Gordy Carvalho will be retiring and Fr. EJ will then be taking his place as the Pastor of Sacred Heart Church and Maryknoll School. We’re excited to have Fr. EJ with us for the start of the school year to learn more about our school, our families and our long-held traditions.

To kick-off the event, Mr. Martin shared a number of different projects and updates with our parents in attendance, including our expansion of our Project Lead the Way curriculum and upcoming renovation plans for Bachelot Hall at the Grade School campus, which will soon be transformed into a multi-purpose, air-conditioned performance and cafeteria space!

He also spoke about our first student who became a pilot through our Mx STEM and Aerospace Program and Civil Air Patrol, in addition to the exciting progress of our Chinese Immersion Program. Mr. Martin was also eager to share our new partnership with Shriners Hospitals for Children – Honolulu. This new partnership means our high school students will be able to enjoy ‘ono, healthy and nutritious breakfast and lunch from Shriners every day, amongst many other academic and service-based opportunities.

Mr. Ben Valle, our Athletic Director, also took the stage to welcome parents to the new year and invited them to cheer on and support our #BoldBraveSpartans as we kick-off the 2018 fall athletics season. Mr. Valle encouraged those in attendance to become involved, not just with athletics but with all aspects of the school and to engage with each other as Spartan parents.

We also introduced those in attendance to our Director of Institutional Advancement, Mrs. Wendy M. Chang, who leads our institutional advancement office. Mrs. Chang explained the importance of our annual fund, and how the Annual Investment in Maryknoll (AIM) benefits all of our students. This will be an exciting year for Maryknoll she’s hopeful that all families become involved and engaged in any ways possible.

Mr. Nelson Uyemura, Grade 3 parent and our Paina Chairperson, spoke about the importance of getting involved with the Annual Paina! This year, our Annual Paina is taking place on Saturday, October 27th from 10:00AM to 4:00PM at the Grade School campus, on the Great Lawn and at the Maryknoll Community Center. Be sure to mark your calendars and get ready for some fun, fellowship and excitement!

And lastly, High School Religion Teacher Mr. Jeff McGivern, shared the importance of Noblesse Oblige and service with our families. He explained how service and giving are incorporated into his lesson plans and classroom activities, and how parents can support their children through the lens of giving and selflessness.

We hope everyone that attended had a great evening! Be sure to join us next year if you weren’t able to this year. If you want more information on how to get involved as a parent, please feel free to contact Jodi-Anne Yoshida, our Family Engagement Coordinator, at pta@maryknollschool.org or call 808-952-8454.
