HI Now: New Program Helps Students Earn Dual Diplomas From HPU And Maryknoll School

Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) is partnering with Maryknoll School to offer an early college program. Through the partnership, Maryknoll students are able to take classes at HPU for the price of Maryknoll tuition. They can even graduate from high school with both a Maryknoll high school diploma and an HPU associate’s degree.

The program is a win-win for both students and parents. Students get a head start on their four-year college degree and get to experience taking classes in the heart of Hawaii’s capitol at Honolulu’s only urban university. They are also steps away from leading business leaders offering case studies, applied business projects, and community partnerships. For parents, this early college program could save them up to two years of college tuition.

“Our partnership with Maryknoll School has been very successful,” says Mani Sehgal, the dean of HPU’s College of Professional Studies. “We graduated our first class of Maryknoll-HPU dual-diploma students this past spring. There were five amazing students who received diplomas from HPU in May and then walked at Maryknoll’s graduation in June.”

Sehgal says these graduates have so much to be proud of and have accomplished a lot in two years of being both Maryknoll students and HPU students.

“Some have chosen to finish their four-year degree at HPU and others are continuing on at other universities with all credits transferring,” he says. “This program has really accelerated them toward achieving their college and career dreams!”

Two more Maryknoll students, including Jacelyn Ho, are on track to graduate this coming spring with diplomas from both Maryknoll and HPU. Ho chose to enroll in the program because she wanted to challenge herself with college courses and get a head start on her bachelor’s degree.

“My college counselors at Maryknoll School encouraged me to sign up for the Maryknoll-HPU dual-diploma program. They helped me to plan my classes so that I can meet the graduation requirements at both schools,” she explains. Ho says her parents have been very supportive because the program is saving her two years of undergraduate college and is helping her achieve her goals even faster.

For those looking to learn more about the partnership between Maryknoll and HPU, Maryknoll is holding an open house on Sunday, November 3. RSVP online at MaryknollSchool.org.
