KHON2 Living808: Maryknoll Spartan Jazz Band Headlines Kekumano Dinner Gala

Maryknoll High School’s Spartan Jazz Band Serves Up Swinging Tunes at the 21st Annual Kekumano Dinner, happening May 11th.

Maryknoll High School Musical Director Thomas Goedecke invited Living808 to hear the band practicing for the big fundraiser.

The Spartan Jazz Band is one of the student performing groups on campus.

It’s made up of Maryknoll high school students on guitar, saxophone, drums, and keyboard.

It’s a creative outlet for the students to get together and jam, and perform at school events and in the community such as the Kekumano Dinner, coming up on May 11.

The Kekumano Dinner is the school’s annual fundraising gala to honor the legacy of Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano, who was an extraordinary community leader here in Hawaii.

“It’s very meaningful for us to be part of this event, which is all about celebrating the spirit of giving in our community” says Goedecke. “Noblesse Oblige is our school’s motto meaning “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

The proceeds from the Kekumano Dinner support student scholarships at Maryknoll.

Nearly all Maryknoll students are involved in the robust Arts Department which includes music, theatre and visual arts.

Students can be part of the school choir, perform in the concert band, be on stage or behind the scenes for our theatre performances, or pursue their passion in painting, drawing, or sculpture.

The Arts are a way for students to express themselves creatively and find their individual voice.

Students can even take AP Music Theory, and students who focus on the Arts can graduate with a Certificate in Creative Arts & Expression.
