HI Now: Maryknoll School Recognizes Standout Students With Kekumano Scholarships

The Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Award and Scholarship Benefit Dinner celebrates and perpetuates the spirit of service to others and giving back. Maryknoll School has been holding this benefit dinner for more than 20 years, and the proceeds from the dinner go to the Kekumano Endowment Fund. This year, Maryknoll is awarding a total of $48,000 in Kekumano Scholarships to students who exemplify leadership, excellence and community service.

Walking away with the top scholarship this year is Kekumano Scholar Anna Wu, a high school junior. She joined HI Now host Kanoe Gibson to talk about receiving this honor.

Wu came to Hawaii in middle school from China then started at Maryknoll in the ninth grade. “I’m honored to receive the Kekumano Scholarship,” she said. While she enjoys volunteering in the community, she says Maryknoll has been a big part of instilling the importance of service into her everyday life. “I volunteer at the Honolulu Zoo every week as an assistant zookeeper and docent. I’ve loved animals ever since I was little, and my work at the zoo enables me to educate others about animals and environmental sustainability.”

2019 Kekumano PR (Anna Wu, LM Cupcakes, Spartan Jazz Band) (1 of 3) Wu is also a volunteer translator and proofreader for the Khan Academy, and has translated and proofread more than 355,000 words so far.

Maryknoll has always inspired its students to be servant leaders. This year, it launched a new program where the entire high school does quarterly community service days. The grades rotate so that each quarter, one grade participates in a Day of Recollection with the Campus Ministry, and the other three grades go out into the community. They have helped numerous organizations, such as Paepae O Heeia, the Honolulu Zoo, the Ala Wai Watershed Association, and many others. The students come back from these service projects with more appreciation for community giving and are inspired to make an impact in helping others.

The Kekumano Dinner is on Saturday, May 11, at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. It will include performances by Maryknoll students along with a live and silent auction.
