KHON2 Living808: Maryknoll Seniors Start Their Own Business: LM Cupcakes
Two Maryknoll high school students started their own business, LM Cupcakes, as a class project and now it’s taking off.
“Anika and I decided to start LM Cupcakes for our senior project. All Maryknoll seniors do a senior project before they graduate. We’re able to choose something that we are passionate about, and it must benefit the community in some way. We chose to start our own cupcake business because we are both passionate about cooking and baking. I want to have my own restaurant someday, and Anika wants to have her own bakery. To launch our cupcake business, we first created a business plan that included defining our unique value proposition, target audience and business strategy. We actually started by making moon cakes! Our business, like any startup, went through an iterative process to refine its product. After experimenting with several mooncake recipes, we switched to making cupcakes in order to get the consistently delicious results that we wanted.”
The cupcakes come in two different flavors, Pineapple and Llikoi.
“Our cupcakes come in two delicious flavors — pineapple and lilikoi. The pineapple and lilikoi flavors are in both the batter and the frosting to give a taste of Hawaii in one bite! We use fresh pineapple and fresh lilikoi juice. The pineapple cupcakes also have some pineapple chunks. The two will be provided their cupcakes to the annual Kekumano Dinner which is a fundraiser gala to honor the legacy of Monsignor Charles A Keumano, who was an extraordinary community leader here in Hawaii.
The proceeds from the Kekumano Dinner support student scholarships at Maryknoll.
“It’s very meaningful for us to be able to give back to our school in this way. We chose to provide the cupcakes at cost to the school because we believe in Noblesse Oblige, which is our school’s motto meaning “To whom much is given, much is expected.”
