Boys Varsity Basketball Team Clinches Back-to-Back ILH Championships

Maryknoll Marketing & Communications
Congratulations to our Boys Varsity Basketball Team on clinching the 2019 ILH Division I Championship with their 55-42 win over #2 ranked Punahou on Monday, February 12th at the Maryknoll Community Center! These Bold, Brave Spartans have also earned a seeded berth and first-round bye in the HHSAA State Basketball Tournament next week! Way to go Spartans!
Spartans repeat as ILH champions - This one wasn't left up for debate. No. 1 Maryknoll built an early 22-5 lead and never looked back as it defeated No. 2 Punahou, 55-42, to win its second straight ILH Division I title Monday night at Tony Sellitto Court at Clarence T. C. Ching Gymnasium. Payton Grant and backup center Liko Soares each scored 14 points to help the Spartans (27-2 overall, 13-1 ILH D1) claim back-to-back league titles for the first time since 1982."

Maryknoll cuts down the net once again -
Two titles in a row. That doesn’t happen very often at the private Catholic school. Actually, it hasn’t been done since coach Tony Sellitto did the trick in the early 1980s. Sellitto, fittingly, was in the house to watch it. He had already left the building, though, by the time the net came down.“I’m so happy right now,” wrecking-ball center Liko Soares said. “I want to go celebrate with my teammates.” Soares scored 13 points in the middle, as did Payton Grant, to lead the offense. “Liko is tough,” coach Grant said. “Sometimes, it’s tough to get him on the floor. We usually rotate him with Marcus Tobin, but when Marcus gets in foul trouble, Liko is in there. When Liko is on the floor, he is almost unstoppable once he touches the ball near the basket.”The Spartans’ calling card is defense. “We’re really good at what we do defensively,” the coach said. “It’s a luxury to coach this kind of team.” The next stop for both top-ranked Maryknoll and No. 2 Punahou is the state Division I tournament.
