Education today at Maryknoll School is about much more than just reading, writing and math. Service to others is a cornerstone of the institution’s goal for all graduates in academic excellence. Hawaii Now host Kanoe Gibson joined some sixth graders, faculty and volunteers cleaning up the Ala Wai Watershed and found out that carrying on the Maryknoll Sisters’ legacy of “noblesse oblige,” the school motto, meaning “to whom much is given, much is expected,” is a part of their everyday objectives.

The entire sixth-grade class helped clean up the Ala Wai watershed in Mānoa. Sixth-grade student Lexie Vasconcellos said, “Giving back to others is so important! It’s something that anyone can do to help others.” Students planted bushes and trees to help prevent topsoil erosion during high water times. Currently, high water levels are taking thousands of pounds of soil, contaminants, and vegetation into the Ala Wai Canal. The goal of this project is to keep the banks of the upstream watershed intact to prevent soil erosion.

Maryknoll inspires students to serve others and give back to the community by incorporating service learning and volunteerism throughout its curriculum for K-12. All high school students complete at least 100 hours of community service by the time they graduate. Last year, as part of the school’s 90th anniversary, 650 students from the entire Grade School (kindergarten through eighth grade) went out into the community for a Day of Service at 8 locations all over O’ahu. By showing students how they can give back to others, Maryknoll School wants to inspire them to make a difference, using their talents and abilities to drive positive change, and be global citizens of character.

Maryknoll School admission office is accepting applications for grades K-12 online at MaryknollSchool.org. The priority deadline is December 15!
