Passing of Sister Maria Rosario Daley, MM

Dear Maryknoll 'Ohana,

It is with much sadness that we write to tell you of the passing of Sr. Maria Rosario Daley, MM. She passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, October 19th. She was 95 and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 73 years.

Sr. Rosario was a much-loved member of the Maryknoll School family and very much a presence on campus, even in retirement. She taught and worked at Maryknoll School on and off over a 50-year span. Maryknoll School was always very special to her, and she was an honorary alumna. Right up to her death, Sr. Rosario continued to take part in school and alumni events. She will be deeply missed, but we rejoice with her Maryknoll family that she is now with God.

Sr. Rosario was born Regina Anne Daley in Albany N.Y. on Feb. 1, 1923. She graduated from Holy Names Academy in Albany in 1941, and the College of St. Rose, Albany, with a B.A. in Latin and mathematics, in 1945. On Sept. 6, 1945, she entered Maryknoll from Blessed Sacrament Parish in Albany.

Three years later, in 1948, she was assigned to Hawaii, teaching Grades 7, 8 and 11 at Maryknoll School until 1957. She then taught 11th Grade at St. Ann’s School in Kaneohe from 1957 to 1963.

She was then sent to Maui, where she taught 11th Grade at St. Anthony’s School from 1963 to 1965. She then enrolled at Boston College in Massachusetts, where she earned an M.A. in Mathematics in 1967.

Later, she joined the faculty at Mary Rogers College, Maryknoll, NY, where she taught mathematics and served in the Admissions Office. In 1973, she switched roles, transitioning from student to instructor, this time at the Maryknoll Seminary, where she earned an M.A. in theology in 1974.

Sr. Rosario then served as the Maryknoll congregation’s Lay Employee Personnel Coordinator and handled immigration matters for non-US Maryknoll Sisters from 1974 to 1985. She then returned to Hawaii, where she worked for the Diocese of Honolulu from 1985 to 1995, then worked in the Guidance Department at Maryknoll High School from 1996 to 2006, as well as in 2014.

Sr. Rosario also served as sacristan and Eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart Church from 1997 to 2003.
