Overview

Maryknoll students have the opportunity to participate in music from grades K-12. Our music program develops students’ artistry, dedication, and teamwork as they learn to read, write, and improvise music. Maryknoll musicians perform regularly at school functions and in the community.

General Music

All students take general music classes from grades K-5. An emphasis is placed on singing, musical games, and community dancing. Kodaly, Orff, and Dalcroze methodologies are used.

Band

Beginning in grade 6, students have the opportunity to take beginning group instruction in a variety of band instruments. Throughout middle school, an emphasis is placed upon improvisation and the study of music literature encompassing various periods and styles. In high school, students may join the Concert Band and the Spartan Jazz Band. Where they will further develop their musicianship and creative capacity.

Choir

Beginning in grade 3, students may join Na Pua O Malia, an after-school choir open to students in grades 3-8. Beginning in grade 6, students have the opportunity to take choir classes. Throughout middle school, the students study vocal technique, ensemble skills, and music literacy while singing music from a variety of genres such as folk music, spirituals, and a cappella. In high school, students may join the Concert Choir, where they continue to grow knowledge and skills as choral musicians.

High School Co-curricular Music opportunities

Foundations of Music is an introductory course that develops performance skills and music theory.

Pep Band perfroms marching, pop, and rock music at sporting events and pep rallies.

Spartan Drumline is for marching percussion and performs at sporting events and community performances.

Chamber Music Society is classical music group that prepares music in small ensembles (duets, quartets)
