Softball coach John Uekawa and boys division one golf coach Danny Lau have both been named Interscholastic League of Honolulu Coach of the Year for their respective sports. Six of Maryknoll's coaches received the accolade during the 2016-2017 athletic season.
Coach Uekawa received his award following an amazing varsity softball season marked by the Lady Spartans winning the school's first ILH D1 championship against Kamehameha. The intermediate team went undefeated in league and championship play, clinching the school's second ILH championship title.
Coach Uekawa, who has been coaching softball for 20 years, has helped build Maryknoll's softball program by "getting the right chemistry, the right players and the experience for the athletes to build on and flourish," he said. With seven returning seniors, he's looking forward to a strong 2017-2018 season and repeat ILH Champion titles.
Boys division one golf coach and former Maryknoll parent Danny Lau has been on the golf circuit for 40 years. He was inspired to coach at Maryknoll after his own children participated in the school's athletic program. Coach Lau, who has been involved in Maryknoll's athletic program for many years, has worked as a volunteer parent, assistant volleyball coach, and as assistant to the golf program initiator.
He enjoys coaching at Maryknoll because of the "tremendous support of our athletes' families together with Maryknoll's athletic department provides a positive, nurturing approach to our student-athletes." He is looking forward to growing the golf team and a competitive future at all division levels.
Congratulations to Coach Uekawa and Coach Lau for their much-deserved ILH awards!
