Cultural and Geography Lessons in PE Classes
12/4/2012

Maryknoll students are participating in some hands on cultural and geography lessons in PE classes this month.  How, you wonder?  By learning about, and playing, two very internationally popular sports that are just beginning to become known here in the United States - rugby and field hockey.

Ask any of the middle school students in Mr. Shawn Williamson’s class where and how rugby originated, and they will all be able to answer – Rugby, England during a school “football” (soccer) game.  What happened?  Well, a player got tired of kicking the ball, so he picked it up and ran with it.  All the other players, of course, tackled him; hence, rugby was born.  Rugby is a sport that requires discipline, communication, and teamwork.  A player can run with the ball to move it forward but may not pass it forward.  The ball can only be passed either backwards or linearly, which requires a lot of communication when trying to avoid being tackled and score a ‘try’, (goal).  Mr. Williamson loves watching the kids play the game as every single person on the field is involved and important to the success of the team.  To further the children’s understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of the game, Mr. Williamson had Etu Baravilala, a former professional rugby player who also began the Hawaii Youth Rugby league, come to Maryknoll to work with the students.  Etu spoke with the students about the growth of rugby and that it will be the newest sport at the Olympics in Brazil in 2016.  Etu further emphasized that every player is critical to the team’s success, the need for communication, and the willingness to work together.  The students enjoyed their time with Etu and will continue playing rugby in PE class for the next few weeks.

Field hockey is the other internationally renowned sport that has made its way to Maryknoll.  This sport came to the school not through a teacher but via a two time National Silver Medalist, Katie Meyer, a senior at Maryknoll

Katie began playing field hockey in 7th grade, a sport she had never even heard of before that year. Trying out for the first time, she made the team and fell in love with it.  Katie has played in its Olympic Development program since 9th grade and has gone to Nationals twice, taking home the silver medal both times.  Furthermore, Katie has participated in multiple national tournaments, returning from her most recent one this past Thanksgiving weekend.

Katie moved to Hawaii from the mainland in August.  She knew that field hockey did not exist as an organized sport on the islands but was determined to keep playing.  While at Nationals this past summer, Katie spoke with representatives of Fundamental Field Hockey, an organization whose goal it is to introduce children to field hockey and get a stick in the hands of as many children as possible.  Because of Katie’s high level of play and enthusiasm, the representatives agreed to let Katie bring Fundamental Field Hockey to Hawaii.  Now, she is working with both public and private schools in the area, teaching students about field hockey.  At Maryknoll, Katie is working closely with Ms. Michelle Gabriel and the 4th graders.  During the month of December, all the 4th graders will have a stick in hand, learning and playing the game of field hockey.

Lady Spartans Basketball Team Wins Merv Lopes Tournament
1/10/2012

Maryknoll School Lady Spartans basketball culminated a busy holiday season by winning the Merv Lopes Girls Basketball Tournament in Manoa.  The Lady Spartans defeated Humbolt (Canada) in the semi-finals before winning the finals against defending DII State Champions, Radford.  The Lady Spartans have continued their winning ways in 2012, with a hard fought  49-35 victory over rival UH Lab on January 7. The win improves the Lady Spartans record to 7-0 in league play.

Maryknoll Boys Basketball Defeats Iolani in Home Opener
1/6/2012

Maryknoll sank 7 of 10 free throws in overtime and finished the game with a 10-3 run tonight to knock off visiting 'Iolani, 47-40, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball action.

Both teams are now 1-1 in the ILH, behind Academy of the Pacific (2-0), University High and Saint Louis (both 1-0).

Tobi Shramm's two free throws put the Spartans up 43-39 at the 32-second mark, and Austin Gaskins capped off the victory with a pair of free throws with 3 seconds remaining.

"We told our guys that there are going to be swings during the game, but they cannot get frazzled," Coach Grant said. "Earlier this season, when the other team made a big run, we would try to come back by playing too much one-on-one. When we get in that situation, we need to be more team-oriented. They did a better job tonight."

Gilmore led Maryknoll with 14 points and Shramm added 10 points.
