Provide a laptop that meets the specifications set forth by Maryknoll School on the Recommended Minimum Computer Requirements form.

Purchase and have installed Microsoft Office, a software package that includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint (does not come installed with your laptop).

Deliver the laptop to Maryknoll High School Library at designated time (you will receive notification of dates this summer). At this time,

Laptop will be configured to access the school’s network.

 Anti-virus software will be installed.

 If not yet done, student will activate personal account by selecting password.

Maintain the laptop for the duration of student’s participation in the program.

Be aware that it is not the school’s responsibility if computer problems occur due to student loading programs that may cause crashes or viruses.

Agree to the Maryknoll Computing Facilities, Networks and Telecommunications Policies attached and as stated in the Student/Parent Handbook, 2005-2007, pp 6-8.

Student

I understand that as a student in Maryknoll’s Laptop Program,

I will label my laptop, disks and other equipment with my name and contact information.

I cannot eat food or drink beverages around my laptop or other electronic equipment while on campus (it is recommended you follow this at home, too).

I will save my work to at least 1 other location besides the computer hard drive: my school network folder or an external storage device (CD, flash drive, firewire, zip or floppy disk). This is in case my laptop breaks or a disk is lost or damaged.

I understand that file sharing programs such as Kazaa, and downloading music and games will slow the operation of my computer and may cause it to freeze. Should problems recur due to my disregarding this warning, it is my responsibility to fix my laptop.

I cannot play games, do IM or Email in class, unless permitted by instructor.

I will not visit sites that are inappropriate or do anything inappropriate on the Internet.

I will not plagiarize. I will cite my sources from the Internet (as well as non-online sources) when doing papers or projects. Some material such as graphics and music may require permission from the creator. If need advice, I will talk to my instructors.

I agree to the Maryknoll Computing Facilities, Networks and Telecommunications Policies attached and as stated in the Student/Parent Handbook, 2005-2007, pp 6-8.

COMPUTING FACILITIES, NETWORKS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Computing facilities, local area networks and Internet access are available to students and teachers at Maryknoll School. Our goals in providing these services are to enhance the educational programs and promote life-long learning through resource sharing and communication with people in our own community, in our nation and in our world.

The Internet and Telecommunications

Redundant Internet access is coordinated through Net Enterprise & System Metrics. Through this service, students and teachers can have access to electronic mail, discussion groups and information and news from various sources. It is our belief that the value of information and interaction available on the Internet outweigh the possibility that users may discover materials inconsistent with the educational objectives of Maryknoll School.

The smooth operation of our computer services depends on the conduct of the users who are expected to follow established rules and guidelines. These guidelines are provided here so that the users understand their ethical and legal responsibilities in using technology.

To ensure proper use of the system, network use (e.g., WWW, email, network data storage, etc.) is logged and is subject to monitoring/review at any time.

Use of Maryknoll School’s Wireless Network

Maryknoll School has set up a wireless network to allow students and teachers access to the Internet from any location on the High School campus. Use of this network is governed by the following special rules (in addition to the Acceptable Use Policy):

The wireless network infrastructure will be maintained by Maryknoll School. The school will be responsible for tracking and maintaining lists of authorized wireless network cards.

Only authorized individuals using authorized wireless network cards will be allowed to use the wireless network.

Personally owned computers allowed to utilize the wireless network are subject to occasional inspection and verification that they are in compliance with network policies.

Acceptable Use Policy

These policies shall apply to all students, teachers, administrators and others who obtain their telecommunications access through Maryknoll School and use the computing facilities on its campuses.

The use of Maryknoll School’s computing facilities and resources must be in support of education and research and consistent with the educational goals of Maryknoll School.

Users must respect each other’s privacy. They shall not attempt to use, modify or access accounts and data belonging to other users. They shall not use anyone else’s log-on ID’s or passwords, or authorize anyone to use theirs. They shall not reveal other users’ phone numbers or addresses without their permission.

They shall respect copyright laws and other licensing agreements pertaining to materials obtained through our network. Transmission of any copyrighted material or material protected by trade secret is prohibited.

Use of network for personal business, commercial product, advertising or political lobbying is prohibited.

Users of Maryknoll School computing facilities and resources must remember that when they communicate with individuals or groups, they do so as individuals. They should not present their ideas, opinions, questions or actions as representing Maryknoll School without permission from school administration.

All electronic messages should use appropriate language. Hate mail, harassment, discriminatory remarks, vulgarities or any other inappropriate language and chain letters are not permitted on our network.

The use of Maryknoll School’s network to access pornographic material, inappropriate photographs and files, or files that could harm the integrity of our LAN (local area network) is not permitted.

Users shall not attempt to access unauthorized files on the network. Copying, deleting or installing any software on the network is prohibited.

Vandalism is prohibited. Vandalism is any malicious attempt to tamper with hardware, software or data of the school or a user. This also includes any activity that would harass other users or infiltrate computer security. Creating or uploading computer viruses is also considered vandalism.

Users shall not attempt to fix any problem by turning on and off or restarting computers as this may result in damage to the Operation System. Notify a system administrator immediately, should a problem occur.

Under no circumstance are students to perform maintenance or attempt repairs to computers or the network. Students will be responsible for any expense due to tampering.

The use of personal e-mail and recreational browsing of the Internet are not allowed during class hours. They will be permitted during non-class hours only if there are no students waiting to do their school work. Games and chat rooms are not allowed at any time. Eating, drinking, and gum chewing are prohibited in the computer lab.

Consequences for Violation of Acceptable Use Policy

The use of computing facilities and resources at Maryknoll School is a privilege, not a right. Violation of the Acceptable Use Policy will be referred to the administration and may result in termination of access privilege, or other disciplinary actions as deemed appropriate.

Warranties

Maryknoll School makes no warranties of any kind for the service it is providing while students use school computers. Maryknoll School is not responsible for any damages the user may suffer. This includes the loss of data due to network troubles or service interruptions. Use of any information obtained through the Maryknoll School network is at the user’s own risk. Maryknoll School denies any responsibility for the quality and accuracy of any information acquired through its services.
