High School Grades (9-12)

They are extraordinary in that they challenge themselves in the classroom, with the much-heralded Essential School Program, but understand their obligation to God, family, brother and sister. During the school year and/or summer, many travel to France, Japan, Costa Rica or Spain to study, while others may devote themselves to clubs and sports. They take the time form their summers to involve themselves with mission work in Majuro, or other community service throughout the islands. They practice the school motto, Noblesse Oblige: "To Whom Much is Given, Much is Expected."

The Essential School at Maryknoll

Upon becoming a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) in January 1995, Maryknoll School implemented a dramatic change in schedule and classroom methodology for the incoming Class of 1998. The Maryknoll Essential School Program follows a normal 180-day school calendar. The school year is divided into three trimesters of 60 days each. Advanced Placement courses are taken over a 90-day period. Students may take one AP class during the junior year and then two more in their senior year. There are exceptions. Students concentrate on two core courses (6 per year) and 1 or 2 electives per trimester (6 possible per year). Courses are integrated where possible, (Ancient Greek History in World History I is taught concurrently with Greek Classical Literature in World Literature I.) World Language (French, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish) and Hawaiian is an intensified immersion program awarding two credits in language, as classes meet 220 minutes per day.
